On Wednesday, Sept. 22, Academy of Art University School of Illustration alumna (M.F.A., ‘19) Irene O’Callaghan will be joining Art U News for a live interview on Clubhouse.
O’Callaghan will be discussing her journey in art and illustration and her most recent endeavor as the founder of Mural Wish, a nonprofit organization. Members of the Mural Wish team will also join us.
Meet Irene O’Callaghan
Currently based in Berkeley, CA, illustrator and muralist O’Callaghan grew up in Boston and Spain. She holds a bachelor’s degree in fine art photography from Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam–she later received her first M.F.A. in fine art from there, where her focus was on cyanotypes, an old photographic printing process. After giving workshops to children on cyanotypes in the museum for contemporary art in Amsterdam, O’Callaghan decided to further develop and enhance her skills as an art educator, which brought her to Academy of Art University. While pursuing her M.F.A. in illustration, she worked as a part-time instructor in the Academy’s School of Photography. O’Callaghan graduated from the Academy in 2019 with her second M.F.A. O’Callaghan is represented by Astound Publishing and has illustrated three published children’s books. The most recent one–‘Love You Little ‘Lady, written by recording artist Brett Young–was released earlier this month. At the end of 2020, O’Callaghan co-founded the nonprofit organization Mural Wish to offer her talents in the form of unique and inspiring murals to critically ill children.
